GIT GUD: Bloodborne

Git Gud, these words have echoed online for close to a decade and have been highly associated with the Souls games and their contemporaries. I finally decided to GIT GUD myself and play not just a soulsbourne to completion but eventually all of the the mainline souls games.  This is my review of my first one I completed Bloodborne.

Spoilers Ahead

Good. All signed and sealed. Now, let's begin the transfusion. Oh, don't you worry. Whatever happens... you may think it all a mere bad dream...
— Blood Minister

Where to start with this game the mystery, the world, the music, the atmosphere, or the design? All these work together to truly immerse the player in the first several minutes of gameplay from waking up in  a dingy clinic to fighting a monstrosity in a grand cathedral with strange statues that make you ask "what are those?" to beautiful dark forests and the hunters dream this game has breathtaking visuals to excite the eyes.  The Gothic city of Yharnham is where you start and you will see beautiful architecture that makes you feel like you're in a weird and twisted dream some buildings seem off like they're leaning, all the iron fences are bent and damaged, bricks are all over the roads, and carriages are all abandoned accross the road. On the other side though we hear npc partying, laughing, and offering warning as to stay inside on the night of The Hunt a strange mystery that draws you asking "What is the hunt? Why is everyone outside trying to kill me"? As you continue through the game the enemies slowly get more grotesque morphing from slightly canine like humans and lycans to full on cosmic horrors. This game is truly beautiful but is equally deadly.  This game is a masterpiece from beginning to end, the camera angles in the few cutscenes sometimes make me forget that I'm playing a game instead of watching a beautifully filmed movie.  The final fight against Gerhman has my favorite shot in this game.

Whatever your reasons might be, you should plan a swift exit. Whatever can be gained from this place, it will do more harm than good...
— Gilbert, when first meeting him.

This game starts you in a precarious position one of vulnerability and inexperience as you walk the dingy halls of Iosefka's clinic only to go the only way possible and encounter a werewolf feasting on its prey.  As most with prior souls experience would do you walk over and press light attack hoping to do a backstab only to find out it's different this time instead you have to charge your heavy to make them vulnerable to a visceral.  once you fail you awaken in the Hunter's Dream where you select the weapons you start with.  The dream will be your main hub for upgrades and leveling. Upon selecting your weapons you find the big difference between the souls series and bloodborne instead of blocking with L1 you transform your weapon and it becomes a different version of the weapon you held before such as a sharp cane transforming into a long serrated whip.

The Hunter's Nightmare

Oh you, I'm afraid I've made a botch of things. I can hear the bell now. The beast assassin, he's after me. Again and again, it never ends. Please, I need you to do something. This village is the true secret... testament to the old sins. It feeds this Hunter's Nightmare. Please... bring an end to the horror. So our forefathers sinned? We hunters can't bear their weight forever. It isn't fair. It just isn't fair...
— Simon the Harrowed, mortally wounded inside the lighthouse

The Hunter's Nightmare was a terrifying expansion added later after bloodborne released.  The Old Hunter's DLC is home to in my opinion the hardest bosses Ludwig, Laurence, and the Orphan of Kos these are the three that made me struggle especially the Orphan.  The Orphan lulled me into a false sense of security as i thought that his easy to parry attacks would spell his quick demise until i hit the second phase and was quickly slaughtered by his wide and at first unpredictable attacks until i finally conquered him.

Overall this game was my first souls game i saw through to the end and am all the happier for it even though the faster paced gameplay has made dark souls feel weird for me as i no longer want to use my shield and instead rely on reflexes and I-frames alone. I am excited to beat more and share my experiences through out.
